Akshay Kumar reunites with Hera Pheri director Priyadarshan for a horror-comedy; director says, “It has always turned out well with him”

Filmmaker Priyadarshan is set to reunite with Akshay Kumar for a new movie, financed by Ekta Kapoor. The subject of the film has been revealed, marking their collaboration after 15 years. The actor-director duo has a successful history at the box office with comedy blockbusters like Hera Pheri (2000), Bhagam Bhag (2006), Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), and De Dana Dan (2009). Priyadarshan confirmed the reunion in a conversation with Hindustan Times.

Priyadarshan confirms working with Akshay Kumar again

The upcoming project promises a blend of horror and fantasy with humour, departing from their previous works. Priyadarshan described it as a departure from their previous works, stating it would explore India’s oldest superstition of magic.

Priyadarshan revealed, “My most important film on which I am beginning work is the one with Akshay, produced by Ekta Kapoor. It is a horror fantasy with humour.” He added, “It is always a pleasure collaborating with Akshay. It has always turned out well with him, he handles the emotions so well.” The upcoming project is a departure from their previous works. Priyadarshan described it as “A horror fantasy, in the backdrop of magic, the oldest superstition of India.” When asked if it would resemble Bhool Bhulaiyaa, he clarified that while Bhool Bhulaiyaa was a psychological thriller, this film would lean more towards fantasy.

Regarding sequels, Priyadarshan expressed his dislike, stating, “I don’t like to do sequels.” He believes the original is always the best, citing examples like Hera Pheri. Despite acknowledging the trend of sequels in the industry, he prefers not to follow suit.

Priyadarshan’s focus has shifted from his docu-series on the Ram Mandir’s history to this upcoming project with Akshay Kumar. With a blend of horror, fantasy, and humour, this collaboration promises a fresh cinematic experience for audiences.

Meanwhile, Anees Bazmee is directing Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, starring Kartik Aaryan, Madhuri Dixit, and Vidya Balan. The film is set for a Diwali 2024 release. Hera Pheri 3 is also in pre-production.
